During the creation of RealKidFriendly.com, I had doubts as to whether this site would be as helpful/necessary for others as it was for us. After all, I was not meeting many parents who had high-energy kids like Boe. Except for the nice woman mentioned in “Is This Necessary?” post, I just wasn’t finding the “kindred spirits” in this life with Boe.
Well, as titled, my doubts were alleviated recently. As I was helping to set up for a library book sale, I came across a book titled “Raising Your Spirited Child”. Blink. Blink. THAT was the term I had been looking for – spirited. I had been using “energetic” to describe him but that just didn’t encompass all that was Boe; “spirited” definitely does.
Being that I was busy, I only took time to read the cover but just from the cover I knew that this book could have been titled “Raising Boe”. That night I began reading it. By page 20, a great sense of relief was washing over me, we were not alone. And I was not the cause of Boe’s inability to sit thru a storytime or go 30 minutes without a meltdown. How wonderful. On almost every page was some snippet or entire paragraph talking about my son. I learned about different temperaments and how transitions from anything are, for the most part, painful for kids like Boe. She also used “more” to describe these kids and that, too is a perfect way to describe my little bundle of energy. More happy, more sad, more intense, more active, more focused, etc.
But mostly, the book caused me to realize that there are plenty of Boes out there. So there are plenty of people who can use real kid-friendly restaurants.
